Pizza Experiences Worldwide: Hugo Chetcuti’s Pick

The pizza experience varies with the culture it is eaten in. From junkyards turned pizzerias to being served by a crane, Hugo Chetcuti and his team have compiled a list of unique ways of experiencing pizza around the globe!

1. Jail House Pizza, Kentucky

Built in 1906, the former Kentucky jail is the site of this original, reportedly haunted pizzeria. The brick structure of the supposedly haunted eatery remains just as it did when it closed in the ‘70s. Guests have the option of dining in padlocked cells or in the adjacent dining room overlooking the Ohio River.

2. Rodízio de pizza, Brazil

Rodízio de pizza is a uniquely-Brazilian experience, perfect for the indecisive. Here, patrons sit at a table and are not given a menu. Waiters walk around holding trays with an assortment of pizzas from which patrons get to choose. This means you can alternate between sweet and savoury pizza. From banana and cheese pizza and Nutella and Smarties to more conventional pizza, Rodízios offer an intriguing way of exploring tastes without committing to one.

3. The Pizza Machine, Tennessee

The pizza machine, a beast of a pizza in size, feeds around 35-40 people. In an unusual twist, however, is that the gigantic treat is delivered by a crane-like machine which positions itself over the table and lowers the pizza down. Futuristic much?

4. Pizza John’s Jardin Escondido

It is difficult to find somewhere more secluded to eat pizza than this joint in Costa Rica. It is set in the midst of the rainforest in a volcano national park, offering the adventurous traveller spectacular views of lagoons, mountains and wildlife while they chow down on delicious pizza. Located over 80 miles from the nearest city, this establishment is widely considered the world’s remotest pizzeria.

5. Joe Bologna’s, Kentucky

Taking the pizza experience to the next level of spiritual, this pizza parlour is housed in a former Jewish synagogue, complete with its original stained-glass windows and loft chandeliers illuminate its interior.
