Father’s Day Traditions Around The World

Festa del Papa has already come and gone in Italy – every year, it’s celebrated on the 19th March, otherwise also known as St. Joseph’s Day. In many other countries, Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday of June. As a father himself, Hugo Chetcuti greatly values the importance of family and tradition. Have a look below to see how countries around the world celebrate this day.

Thailand

The Thai don’t have a fixed annual date for Father’s Day – it’s celebrated on whatever day the current king’s birthday falls on. For the past few years it has been celebrated on the 5th December, in honour of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. It’s a national holiday in Thailand, with public buildings and households decorated in yellow, the king’s colour. Everyone will also be dressed in yellow, and huge celebrations are held, complete with fireworks, sparking street lights, music and song.

Brazil

Called Dia dos Pais in Portuguese, the Brazilians celebrate Father’s Day on the second Sunday of August. Many families celebrate by having one of the most popular Brazilian meals in the country – a good old fashioned churrasco, either at a steakhouse or barbecuing up a storm at home.

Australia

Australians celebrate Father’s Day on the first Sunday of September. Families usually gather for breakfast and children present small gifts and cards. Many charity events or marathons are held around the country to raise money for causes such as prostate cancer or the blind.

Japan

Like us, Father’s Day in Japan falls on the third Sunday of June. It translates to Chichi no hi in Japanese, and it’s common for children to give their father small gifts such as sweets, beer glasses and even origami. Meals usually consist of seafood or wagyu, Japanese beef.

Germany

It should come as no great surprise that the Germans celebrate this day with one thing in particular – beer! Father’s Day in Germany is commemorated on Ascension Day, forty days after Easter. It’s really a celebration for men in general, as the moniker Männertag implies. It’s perfectly normal to find groups of men outside pulling wagons or large carts filled to the brim with beer and liquor, hiking and drinking together in raucous celebration. It’s not much fun for the wives to have to deal with the hangover the next day…
