Hugo Chetcuti’s love for Italian cuisine is no secret, yet although Italians are widely credited for having invented pizza, every culture has its own take on it. And since Hugo Chetcuti is always up for trying something new – be it business or food – we’ve come up with a few non-traditional toppings adventurous foodies may be tempted to try.
Disclaimer: Italian readers: look away.
1. Banana Curry – Sweden
The pineapple-on-pizza debate is only the beginning. Those (particularly Italians) who are offended by pineapple being used as a pizza topping are going to love banana and curry powder on pizza.
2. Coconut – Costa Rica
Keeping with the fruit-on-pizza-theme, Costa Rica mixes things up with shrimp and coconut – which should come as no surprise considering most of their beaches are peppered with coconut trees. When sprinkled on pizza, coconut flakes add a unique texture – not to mention taste. Costa Rica: keeping it exotic.
3. Eel – Japan
Pizza may not be the first food you associate with Japan, but it is actually a pretty popular dish. Eel and squid are underwater delicacies often scattered over Japanese pizza toppings. Moreover, squid ink is sometimes used as an alternative to the typical red sauce.
4. Seaweed – Japan
This pizza also merges Japanese cuisine with the classic Italian recipe, adding Kombu seaweed simmered in soy sauce and sweet rice wine as a topping, lending the pizza a slightly salty, bold flavour.
5. Chips (Fries) – The USA (?)
Why choose between a pizza and burger with fries when you can have fries on pizza? It has been dubbed the ‘American Style’ pizza but the real question is, do the North Americans or Italians love it more?
6. Lasagne – The USA
Another one for the indecisive, lasagne pizza is exactly what you think it is: Bolognese, white sauce and parmesan cheese. Talk about rich!
7. Tikka Chicken – India
Leave it to the Indians to put their spin on pizza and include distinct toppings such as chicken tikka, tandoori chicken as well as pickled ginger and chili flakes.
At Hugo’s Pizza and Pasta, Hugo Chetcuti’s creative pizzaiolos and chefs are all for experimenting and using non-traditional ingredients, which is why we offer a wide range of gourmet pizzas apart from traditional ones. With ingredients ranging from pumpkin cream to basil pesto, curious eaters are guaranteed to have a unique pizza experience!
